Synopsis: The quilts in this book were used in the Underground Railroad escape to the North and into Canada. Mama made some of these quilts and quilted some of them in the fan style similar to some of the slave quilts I had seen in pictures.

- I am the tenth of eleven children and grew up in our beloved Summerfield Community in Macon, Georgia in the very late thirties. In this community it was family, church school and the Society Hall in that order. I grew up listening to stories of how my father’s father brought his first hundred acres in 1894. He later purchased another hundred acres and had a dairy. The Great Depression came and grandfather died in 1932. We lost the dairy but not the land. Mother’s grandfather was in the Civil War, the Navy. Her grandmother was a Creek Indian. We heard stories about the Great Depression more than slavery. In Summerfield, we had farmers who owned their own land, carpenters, brick layers, mechanic, seamstress ...
